The download speed test sends a 2.5MB file to your browser and times how long it takes you to receive it. The test usually takes about 20 seconds to run over a 1Mbps ADSL line.

To get an accurate result you should not use your connection for anything else while the test runs. I.E. stop any downloads and log out of MSN etc.

The test result includes all network overheads and therefore it is normal for the result to be slightly slower than your ISPs advertised rate. However, the result is what you should be able to actually achieve when downloading files and surfing the web etc.
